well... AE is easier to understand imho, but isn't it a shame that we* can barely understand our neighbours but have no problem to understand us-americans? I honestly wish it was the other way round :/ just for the sake of them being europeans ^^

you have to take the region into account though. my sister lived in Oxford for 1 year and as we visited her we had no problem to understand the brits there.

and yes, BE is way funnier :d I like the pronunsciation and the melody of their sentences somehow :xmas:

I meant "good day" as in german as a greeting. iirc the australians were the only ones who said "good day". am I right?
 
British people use "good day" as well.
 
Great thread indeed. Now that I passed all my exams in English and heading for the "Abitur" I will run out of practising my english-skills. That sucks! :d
However I am planning to have a little trip to an english-speaking country after my community service (I've looked this up, it's english for "Zivildienst")... maybe you've got suggestions to which state I could travel. It doesn't have to be USA or UK all the time, does it? :)
I am sure that about two months would be far enough to get my skills perfected.
 
I doubt you will be able get your skills perfected within a 2 months stay. I have been to the UK for several weeks as a chaperon for english youngsters. It was helpful and I assume that I could in fact improve my English. But I'm still far away from perfect.

btw: the correct term for Zivildienst is "alternative service for conscientious objectors". I told many people I was doing the community service (which unfortunately could be understood as a kind of detention), but they didn't really understand as there is no exact equivalent to "Zivildienst" in the UK. "alternative service for conscientious objectors" does not eliminate all questions, but most people understand. :)

Actually, what I wanted to say was that it's not a question of understanding but rather a question of preference, of sympathy ;) I have no problem distinguishing or understanding different English accents. However, I feel more comfortable speaking AE myself.

That being said, there are strage American accents out there. The Boston accent is a great example for this. Could you believe that this boy lives in Massachusetts? :fresse:

@tetra: Right at the moment, I would certainly prefer the States over GB or Australia. Have you had a look at the dollar rate recently? :fresse: It's so cheeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaap...cheaper than a trip to Munich, I'd say. ^^
